Suffice it to say, Emporia City Manager Mark McAnarney is pleased with how the city’s annual fireworks show went Thursday night.
The city took on a greater involvement in this year’s show after the Flint Hills Optimists decided against organizing and launching the show for the first time in 12 years. The city partnered with a group of volunteers led by pyrotechnician Bernie Toso, purchasing some equipment and providing insurance for the show.

Separately, the Lyon County Emergency Communication Center was busy with 26 fireworks complaint calls Thursday night and early Friday. Police Sgt. Lisa Sage says dispatchers fielded 37 complaint calls since midnight Monday and 46 calls since the sale and discharge period began June 27. No cases have been written up.
There have been no fireworks-related fires or injuries reported by the Emporia Fire Department this week.
