Emporia Police have taken a report on a possible vandalism incident at the All Veterans Memorial.
One of the Huey helicopter’s windows was broken out. The timing of the incident is unclear, although local veterans Frank Lowery and Ron Whitney say the damage was noticed as volunteers were in the process of installing and flying flags Thursday morning for the Fourth of July.
Lowery says a replacement window has been priced at $850, with shipping and installation extra. Veterans are researching other prices before moving forward.
The helicopter is on loan from the Iowa National Guard to the city of Emporia, according to Lowery. It was brought to the memorial from Davenport, Iowa, in 1999.
As veterans were inspecting the damage from that incident, Whitney says they also found somebody had apparently cleaned a fish inside the Grant F. Timmerman memorial space, leaving the carcass and guts behind. That has since been cleaned up.
No suspect information has been announced. If you have information, call Emporia Police at 343-4200.
