Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods updated listeners on the happenings at Main Street during KVOE’s Talk of Emporia Friday.
One of the most exciting pieces of information Woods shared during the program was the city of Emporia will be seeing 32 new veterans banners in downtown Emporia this year. Main Street recently concluded their banner drawing and are in the process of gathering photographs and compiling bios for each of the veterans whose faces will adorn the streets of downtown Emporia later this year.
Woods says the banner project is not only a tribute to the men and women who have served our country, but it also promotes an understanding and sparks a dialogue on the sacrifices which have to be made to protect our freedom.
The banners are scheduled to be up around mid-October and will remain through mid-November.
Main Street is also getting set for what is sure to be a busy week of activities. Tuesday Main Street will hold their annual meeting at the Copper Top beginning at noon. The public is welcome to attend the meeting and hear about what is in the works for the organization for the remainder of 2019 into next year. There is a cost of $10 for lunch which will be provided by Casa Ramos.
Later in the week, Main Street will play host to the Junior Worlds Disc Golf tournament block party on Friday. The weekend festivities will conclude with the Lunar Kanza launching on Saturday.
Woods says with all of the fun-filled activities taking place on a regular basis in the downtown area, he is excited for the recent addition of the new downtown sound system which made its debut during the Dirty Kanza earlier this year. Woods says the system allows them to enhance the atmosphere downtown by filling the streets with music and being able to address large crowds much easier than before.
Even with its current capabilities, however, Woods says they still haven’t fully tapped the system’s full potential.
