Cleanup is underway at Teter Rock after a recent round of vandalism.
The iconic stone was spray-painted with graffiti this week, and the incident came to light after a round of social media posts through the day Friday. Property co-owner Ross Hendrickson says an unspecified number of people were identified as responsible, and at least one returned to the property before sunset Friday to start the cleanup process.
Greenwood County Sheriff Heath Samuels says the property owners have declined to press charges. After cleanup, Teter Rock will be reopened to the public.
The original Teter Rock monument was erected in the 1870s or 1880s by James Teter and lasted into the 1920s, according to online information provided by MRH Insurance Group — where Hendrickson serves as president. The monument was rebuilt in the 1950s.
