The Emporia Rescue Mission continues looking for a new address, and leaders are now casting a wider net as they keep searching.
On a recent Talk of Emporia, Director Lee Alderman said Kwik Shop’s planned expansion at 12th and Merchant has prompted the Rescue Mission to look for a new home.
Alderman says mission leaders have found several suitable properties, but zoning has become a roadblock with those locations. Alderman says people and businesses are reluctant to have a homeless shelter next door, but he also says the current facility at 1119 Merchant needs to be replaced with $80,000 to $100,000 in repairs now needed. The mission would like to be downtown, and Alderman says there are several reasons why:
Kwik Shop actually started its expansion process in late 2017. When the Rescue Mission announced it was actively seeking a new location last fall, a deadline of March 1 was mentioned. A new deadline has not been announced.
