Emporia plays host to the 2019 PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships this week.
Over 200 Junior Disc golfers from all 50 states and 5 countries, ranging from ages 8-18 will meet in Emporia to compete for Junior World Championship honors. This will be Emporia’s second consecutive year to host these championships, the second year of a three year contract agreement between the city and the PDGA. Dynamic Discs CEO Jeremy Rusco speaks on how local volunteers play such a vital role in making this possible.
Unofficial play began over the past weekend with team doubles, skill shot competition, driving competition, and mini disc golf. Official check-in is Tuesday from 9 am – 5 pm at the Granada Theater with opening ceremonies to follow from 7 pm – 8 pm.
Offical play begins Wednesday and over the course of the week multiple Emporia parks including Peter Pan, Jones East, Jones West, Hammond Park and Flint Hills Technical College will be in use as official courses. Play will conclude with the finals starting Saturday at the Emporia Country Club. All courses will be free for viewing and it is highly encouraged to cheer these young players along. Rusco speaks more about the impressive skills of these young athletes.
The week’s festivities will close with a Friday Night Block Party in downtown Emporia from 6 pm – 9 pm. For more information, visit pdgajuniorworlds.com with full play schedules.
