One of the big names in Kansas politics is making a run for the US Senate.
Kris Kobach, a former Secretary of State and an adviser to President Donald Trump on voting matters, formally announced his campaign Monday.
Kobach served two terms as Secretary of State from 2010-2018. He also was chair of the Kansas Republican Party before becoming Secretary of State. After his second term as Secretary of State came to an end, he briefly headed Trump’s voter fraud commission and pushed hard for tighter voter identification laws in Kansas — including taking names off voter rolls if they didn’t match state IDs. In an ironic twist, Kobach’s initial filing misspelled his first name.
Kobach is the third announced Republican to run for the Senate seat vacating next year when longtime Senator Pat Roberts retires, following announcements by current Kansas Treasurer jake LaTurner and former Kansas City Chief Dave Lindstrom. On the Democrat side, former US Attorney for Kansas Barry Grissom and former Kansas Congressman Nancy Boyda have announced campaigns.
