Our fifth round of flooding since late April did Emporia city staffers no favors as they try to shore up a streambank on the south edge of town.
Heavy rainfall from late last week submerged a temporary fix of a broken sanitary sewer pipe near the South Arundel cul-de-sac. Assistant City Manager Lane Massey says this was the second temporary fix after the 36-inch pipe and nearby streambank collapsed in mid-June, prompting a stream advisory for the risk of elevated bacteria or other contaminants involving the Cottonwood River at Emporia and connecting tributaries near town.
Massey says engineers are working on options and may have word on a more permanent fix within the next 30 days. The stream advisory continues until further notice.
Prior flooding in May damaged some equipment in the Wastewater Treatment Plant. That has since been repaired.
