Renovations continue at USD 251 North Lyon County’s school buildings.
Superintendent Mike Mathes tells KVOE News the process is going well at both locations and could be finished by the end of this month. At North Lyon County Elementary and Junior High, the project list has included a remodeled and secure entrance, move of the main offices and the construction of both a nurse’s station and social worker office.
A new secure entrance is also under construction at Northern Heights. Other projects have included repaving parts of the main parking lot, adding new lockers and repainting or repairing walls.
Total cost is around $800,000, and Mathes says the work has been well-received across the district.
Mathes’ update with KVOE News comes after the USD 251 school board re-elected Matt Horton as president and Angela Anderson as vice president for the coming academic year. Mathes says continuity is important for the district.
Mathes is halfway into a two-year term as interim superintendent, and he’s still planning to step aside after his second year on the job next summer. Mathes came on board last year after prior superintendent Aron Dody stepped down last year. Dody tried unsuccessfully three times to have patrons approve bonds for new facilities and oversaw the closure of Reading Elementary due to building-specific enrollment concerns and districtwide budget concerns.
