Emporian Steve Harmon will take on new responsibilities with the Kansas Army National Guard during a ceremony this weekend.
Harmon will become the command sergeant major/senior enlisted advisor with current Command Sgt. Maj. Harold Whitley taking on a new role as command sergeant for the 35th Infantry Division. Harmon will manage the Kansas Army National Guard and will represent its interests at all levels of local and state government as well as the public on issues like professional development, readiness, training, morale and welfare.
Harmon is the former senior enlisted advisor to the Kansas Army National Guard’s 69th Troop Command and has had numerous roles with the National Guard since enlisting in 1986. He has served as command sergeant major of the Kansas Army National Guard’s Joint Forces Headquarters, advisor to the Afghanistan National Army 205th Corps, command sergeant major of the 287th Special Troop Battalion and as Army Central command sergeant major and 635th Regional Support group command sergeant major in Kuwait.
Harmon’s award list includes the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Badge and Order of the Spur.
Harmon will officially take on his new role with a Change of Responsibility ceremony at Topeka’s Forbes Field at 2 pm Sunday.
