The Lyon County Commission is preparing to approve what Commission Chairman Rollie Martin calls a “fair budget for everyone.”
Martin, KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 guest Monday, says over the past two months commissioners, and Lyon County Controller Dan Williams, have been working to finalize the budget for fiscal year 2020. Commissioners approved the budget for publication during their weekly action session last Thursday.
The total budget comes out to just over $20 million. The budget will see a three-quarters of a mill, or .75 percent, decrease to the mill levy. Martin says valuation increases play a big role in the decrease.
During the segment Monday morning, Martin also discussed the impact repair work to the Lyon County road network will have on next years budget. The answer, not much.
While the road network will not have much of an impact on the budget, the city-county radio project will. Martin says half of the project will be funded by sales tax revenue and the other by property tax revenue.
In addition to the mill levy decrease, Martin was happy to announce the commission was able to remain below the Consumer Price Index cap of 1.5 percent set by the state of Kansas.
A public hearing will be held on August 22, after which time the commission may hand down final approval of the 2020 budget. Martin invites all Lyon County residents to share their input and feedback on the budget either through attending the meeting or by contacting commissioners. The public hearing will take place at 10 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
