A load of unprocessed meat was charred beyond recognition after a semi caught fire near Emporia on Tuesday.
Emergency responders were called to the scene of a vehicle fire at Kansas Turnpike mile marker 123, four miles south of the Emporia tollgate, around 3:45 pm. Batallion Chief Rich Gould says upon their arrival crews discovered a semi-truck on fire.
According to Gould crews had the fire under control in roughly 17 minutes. The semi and the trailer were a total loss. There is no word on the load’s weight or where it was headed for processing.
Traffic in the northbound lane was at a standstill for a time as crews worked to get the fire under control and clear the scene. The driver of the semi was unharmed according to the Emporia Fire Department. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
