The Emporia Municipal Airport is one of two area airports and over 20 across Kansas receiving federal funds for improvements.
The Emporia airfield is getting $360,000 to buy land for approaches. Emporia Assistant City Manager Lane Massey tells KVOE News the city has purchased three properties on the north end of the airport. Massey anticipates work on the approaches should be completed by the end of 2019 weather permitting.
The Coffey County Airport, meanwhile, is getting over $4 million to rebuild the runway and reconstruct nearby lighting.
The money is administered by the Federal Aviation Administration. In all, over 230 airports in 43 states are receiving over $8 billion for projects like runway reconstruction, construction of firefighting facilities and airport maintenance.
