Lyon County needs child care providers, and Flint Hills Community Health Center has a special orientation coming next week for people who may be interested.
Child Care Coordinator Jamie Roberts, a guest on KVOE’s Morning Show recently, says the orientation is the first step in the process. Typically, orientation costs $15, but the upcoming event Tuesday evening is free.
Child care numbers have dropped about 20 the last two years. Official reasons are unclear but could include personal schedules or changes in personal goals.
To be licensed, residents have to be at least age 18 and have a high school diploma or GED. They also have to pass a background check. The Health Center only licenses homes as daycare facilities, so apartments or duplexes will not receive licenses. Daycare providers also have to take regular classes on topics like safe sleep practices, child development, first aid and CPR, but Roberts says new providers can take advantage of a grant through the Emporia Community Foundation to get up to $250 worth of health and safety equipment.
The orientation is at 6 pm Tuesday. For more information about the orientation or child care licensing, call Roberts at 342-4864 ext. 5.
