If the Topeka Rescue Mission closes next month — which is possible, given the charity’s finances — Emporia Rescue Mission Director Lee Alderman expects more men knocking on the local mission’s doors.
That’s not to say all will be allowed inside. Last year, the Rescue Mission implemented a new policy where it accepts only Emporia men, men coming out of the Lyon County Jail or men who have a local parole officer after coming out of prison. Alderman says the policy has worked well in eliminating traveling methamphetamine addicts, who “wreak havoc with our guys and cause trouble in the community.”
On the financial side, Alderman says the Rescue Mission is stable for the next few months — which is apparently different than the Topeka mission, which needs $180,000 by Sept. 15 or else it closes down entirely. He tells KVOE News it’s time for people to donate winter coats.
Alderman and Rescue Mission board members have been looking for a new home with the current facility at 1119 Merchant needing upwards of $100,000 in repairs and Kwik Shop next door looking to expand and reconfigure its space. Alderman says at least two properties are currently under consideration. Locations are not being announced at this time.
