A week is left before the Lyon County Election Office begins mailing ballots out to registered Emporia voters.
Those ballots will determine whether USD 253 Emporia has public approval to use a $78 million bond to renovate schools across the district. Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat says residents should expect to see ballots in their mailboxes by Aug. 19 or 20.
There’s also a yellow envelope inside that with your ballot. Once you have voted, fold the ballot in half, put it in the yellow envelope with name, address and signature where indicated — and either hand-deliver it to the Lyon County Courthouse or mail it back. The signature is vitally important because Election Office staffers will check all ballot signatures against those on file to eliminate the risk of vote fraud.
Registrations are due next Thursday. The mail-in election is officially Sept. 5, but Vopat says ballots need to be turned in as soon as possible — and if they are being mailed back, they should be in mailboxes no later than Sept. 3. People can also go to the Lyon County Courthouse to return ballots, but those need to be in hand by noon Sept. 5 or else they don’t count.
