Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across the KVOE listening area through the early stages of the week.
A marginal risk of severe weather is currently underway through the overnight hours along the Kansas Turnpike just west of Emporia. Wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible if storms develop.
The marginal risk continues through mid-morning Sunday, although the area of concern shifts to an area north of Interstate 35 and US Highway 50. Again, high winds are the main severe weather risk.
Lyon and all surrounding counties are in a marginal risk Monday for wind gusts up to 60 mph.
Besides the storm risk, oppressive heat is also in the forecast. Greenwood County is in a heat advisory from Sunday afternoon to Monday evening, and area residents had a taste of the nasty heat Saturday afternoon. Emporia’s high temperature was limited to 86, but dewpoints as high as 80 pushed the heat index to 101. Air temperatures will climb to the mid-90s by Monday, and heat index reading should be at or above 100 Sunday and Monday.
