This weekend marks 33 years that the Flint Hills Beef Fest has been celebrating the local grass cattle industry.
According to their website, several contests involving cattle are designed to showcase the quality and economic competitiveness of Flint Hills cattle. Committee member Brian Rees talks about the importance of this industry in the local area.
Flint Hills Beef Fest weekend schedule:
Friday, August 23
- 9:00 a.m. – Live Stocker Show at the Emporia Livestock Sale Barn
- 11:30 a.m. – Beef Producers Seminar with Lunch at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Bowyer Building
- 6:00 p.m. – Ranch Feed at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Bowyer Building
- 7:00 p.m. – Ranch Rodeo (with Calf Scramble) at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Arena
Saturday, August 24
- 5:30 p.m. – Awards Banquet at the Civic Auditorium
- 6:30 p.m. – Steak Dinner at the Civic Auditorium
- 7:30 p.m. – Entertainment (Mark Mayfield) at the Civic Auditorium
- 9:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. – Dance (Brickhorse) at the Civic Auditorium
Sunday, August 25
- 8:30 a.m. – Golf Tournament at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course
While public events begin on Friday, Rees says the Beef Fest hopes to be in full motion by Thursday.
Tickets for the Awards Banquet are $40 per person and must be bought in advance at Emporia Vet Hospital, Jim’s Cowboy Shop, and Frontier Farm Credit.
