The financial outlook for Lyon County is very positive as Lyon County Commissioners have formally approved the budget for 2020.
Before accepting and approving the budget during their weekly action session Thursday morning, commissioners also voted to accept the county’s audit report for 2018. The report showed an increase of just over $2 million in total unincumbered cash from the previous year.
Lyon County Controller Dan Williams says there are a few factors which contributed to the increase.
Williams says there were two “minor over-budgets” one of which was Community Corrections and the other being the multi-year fund. Williams says thankfully these two items will not have any negative impact on the county’s financial standing. Williams also says the county has been paying for the majority of its projects with cash leading to the county once again being debt-free.
Following the presentation and acceptance of the report, commissioners moved into a public hearing on the 2020 county budget. The overall total comes out to over $31 million and will see a three-quarters of a mill decrease to the mill levy.
Commission chair Rollie Martin recently referred to the budget as “a fair budget.” During Thursday’s hearing, Martin stated the budget provides funding for the city/county radio project without needing to borrow money while also providing a mill decrease to assist taxpayers among other benefits.
Martin feels the results of the audit report should give local residents a high amount of confidence in both the commission’s efforts and the 2020 budget overall.
Commissioners accepted and approved the budget 3-0.
In other business, commissioners also approved the purchase of property located at 2634 West Highway 50 between the Lyon County Fairgrounds and Extension office. The total cost of the purchase is $125,000. The property is currently owned by Terry and Floyd McCraken.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for their weekly action session next Thursday at 8 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
