Neosho Rapids residents are banding together to help update the city park.
Saturday saw the first planned fundraiser “Kicking it for the Kids” take place and featured kids and adult kickball tournaments and a cornhole tournament. Organizer Melissa Carson, our Newsmaker 2 guest Monday morning, says she was extremely pleased with the turnout.
In total 20 children took part in the kid’s kickball game, while six teams participated in the adult tournament and 15 teams played in the cornhole tournament. Carson says Saturday’s activities resulted in just over $3,500 being raised towards improvements to the park.
Carson says the improvements are desperately needed as much of the equipment at the park is over 40-years-old and beginning to show signs of deterioration.
According to Carson, providing handicap accessibility to the park is the main priority with the improvement efforts.
Carson says they have more fundraisers in the developmental stages. Carson says the estimated total for all renovations will be around $700,000.
She says their fundraising goal is around $350,000 and she and others are in the process of applying for local grants to help provide the additional funding. Carson says they feel “really good” about reaching their goal as the city of Neosho Rapids has pledged a “generous” contribution towards the effort as well.
