Scams towards the general public seem to be commonplace these days, and scams are now increasingly targeted at college students.
Emporia State Police and Safety is urging students to be mindful of scams, especially when it comes to job offers — appropriate, considering this is the Labor Day weekend. The latest scam comes when students receive fake checks for amounts higher than agreed upon. Scammers will tell students to spend the extra money for supplies and then send the rest back to scammers — but when check’s don’t clear, students then lose that money.
As with most scams, there are tip-offs that things may not be legitimate, including the general use of the word “university” instead of a specific institution and not demonstrating any knowledge of who the sender actually is.
Emporia State students are told to call Police and Safety at 341-5337 or the university’s IT department at 341-5555 if anything suspicious arises.
