The Emporia community is invited to celebrate victory with those on the road to recovery this month.
Corner House will be holding recovery in the park on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Jones Park to celebrate the steps taken by individuals who are battling addiction as a part of National Recovery Month. Event organizer and Corner House representative Autumn Irwin says when it comes to recovery, celebrating triumphs — big or small — is a vital component.
She says the celebration will also serve as a time for education on treatment services available within the local community.
Several sponsors and donors have helped contribute to the celebration, including Flint Hills Community Health Center, Beacon For Hope, Fanestil Meats, Good’s Cash Saver, Coca-Cola, Billy Sims BBQ of Topeka and an anonymous donor.
Recovery in the Park will take place at Jones Park with lunch being served starting at 11:30 am.
Corner House is a local non-profit alcohol and drug treatment and referral program.
The list of services provided by Corner House includes alcohol and other drug assessment, level I outpatient treatment, level II intensive outpatient treatment, adolescent outpatient treatment, and employee assistance program services. According to Executive Director Rod Shepperd, Corner House treated over 390 clients in 2018, which he says is a decrease of 65 individuals from 2017.
He says this is an indicator their treatments are working.
Providing treatment for individuals is no easy task, however, Shepperd and Corner House President Raymond Rogers were happy to announce community organizations are helping Corner House to provide those services. Corner House was recently made the recipient of a $5,000 grant from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad company for the purchase of new computers. In addition, the City of Emporia has given the organization $65,000. Shepperd says they are expecting additional donations from Chase County and the Aloha Preston Trust who have been generous benefactors for Corner House for the past several years.
