The early returns on USD 251 North Lyon County’s education redesign efforts are promising.
Superintendent Mike Mathes joined KVOE’s Morning Show recently to update the redesign and other topics. He calls the redesign a “paradigm shift” that’s both evolutionary and revolutionary.
When it comes to facilities, Mathes says the district spent about $1 million for security enhancements and other upgrades, including a two-year repaving project at Northern Heights. Earlier this decade, patrons turned down three separate bonds for new or renovated schools. Mathes says the district will eventually have to consider another bond — and there is a lot to consider as the district looks ahead.
As education redesign officially takes hold in classrooms, USD 251 is getting ready to launch its brand-new Honor Flight program earlier than expected. The original plan was to have the first trip next fall, but now Honor Flight — which partners veterans and students on a quick trip to Washington, D.C. — will debut with a trip this November. The district is raising $7,000 to make the trip happen.
