51-14 was the final score Thursday night as Emporia State opened the 2019 season with a win over Northeastern State.
The Hornets scored on their first 5 possessions. Quarterback Dalton Cowan threw 3 touchdown passes.
Cole Schumacher, Corey Thomas, Dexton Swinehart and Seth Surface each caught a touchdown pass. Swinehart caught 5 passes for 112 yards including a 74 yard touchdown pass reception.
Carlos Grace and Calvin Boyce each scored a rushing touchdown.
Braden Gleason also threw a touchdown pass.
Clark Schoonover kicked 3 fieldgoals and was 6 for 6 on PATs.
The Hornets defense had 3 interceptions. Lawson Holbert had 2 of the interceptions.
Coach Garin Higgins said he was proud of the way they played.
Coach Higgins said there was a different vibe before the game.
Emporia State plays at Pittsburg State next Saturday.
