The Emporia High football team rode a great defensive effort on the way to a 17-6 win over Washburn Rural in their season opener Friday night.
The Spartan defense held Rural to 36 yards of total offense and 2 fieldgoals.
Offensively for the Spartans Kyle Obermeyer kicked a 26 yard fieldgoal. Skyler Douglas scored on a 1 yard run and Beau Baumgardner added a 1 yard run.
The Spartans will host Topeka West next Friday night.
