With American flags held by young and old alike, the Interstate 35 Exit 160 bridge near Melvern came alive for the 17th annual rendition of Random Acts of Patriotism.
Hundreds of people have stopped on the bridge, some for a few minutes, others for a few hours, all to pause and reflect on the 18th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Britt Peters of Ottawa has been making the trip every year — and he brings his family each time. He says it’s important for everybody to remember.
Students in the USD 253 Transitions department also made the trip. Teacher Kari Wallace says Random Acts of Patriotism is an extended teaching moment.
This is the 18th anniversary of planes destroying both towers of the World Trade Center complex and damaging the Pentagon after they were hijacked by al Qaeda militants. A fourth plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people died as a direct result of those attacks.
