There was a hot time in the old town Saturday as Do-B’s held its first Insanibee wing eating contest.
Five contestants had to chow through six wings drenched in Insanibee sauce — a combination of ghost peppers, Carolina Reaper peppers and other eye-watering, stomach-burning spices — and then hold the wings down during a cool-off period. Do-B’s co-owner Leslie Lloyd says a lot of people say they like hot and spicy foods, but only a select few can make it through this kind of challenge.
Ryan Kurtenbach took home the title. He says he had one thing in mind:
The event took on more significance when Aaron Graves, the so-called “Kapsaicin Kid,” stopped by to serve as guest emcee and try the sauce. Graves’ mother, Sarah, says he’s doing well after suffering from a series of heart defects and three surgeries — but he’s been waiting for a heart transplant for over a year. His time as the Kapsaicin Kid developed after bugging his mom for a YouTube channel.
As part of his brief stay in Emporia, Lloyd and her husband, Daryn Bontrager, presented Graves with a small drivable tank. Graves also tried the Insanibee sauce and gave it his seal of approval for both spice level and flavor.
