Emporia/Lyon County EMS took two people to Newman Regional Health after a crash just west of Emporia on Sunday.
Lyon County deputies say 62-year-old Deanna Thompson-Simpson of Emporia was westbound on US Highway 50 when her SUV left the highway near Road E-5 and rolled to the driver side around 5:15 pm, stopping against a tree near the Cottonwood Cemetery’s south fence. Thompson and a passenger, 20-year-old Christopher Garr of Emporia, were both hospitalized afterward.
Emporia Fire initially listed Garr as a juvenile shortly after the crash.
Both occupants were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. It’s unclear why the SUV left the highway.
7:30 pm Sunday: Two hurt in Sunday’s crash west of Emporia
Two people have been taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health after Sunday’s SUV crash outside Emporia.
An adult female and juvenile male were hurt after the SUV went off US Highway 50 just west of Road E-5 and hit a tree, according to Emporia Fire. Names have not been released and crash details are currently being investigated by Lyon County deputies.

6:20 pm Sunday: Injury crash reported on US Highway 50 outside Cottonwood Cemetery
Lyon County deputies are investigating an injury crash that developed on US Highway 50 just west of Emporia early Sunday evening.
Deputies and Emporia EMS were called to the 500 block of US-50, just west of Road E-5, shortly after 5 pm. Deputies on site say they discovered a westbound SUV had veered off the highway and hit a tree just outside Cottonwood Cemetery.
Deputies say two people were inside. EMS crews checked both out but have not transported either to a hospital as of 6:15 pm.
Highway 50 traffic has been slowed but is still moving around the crash scene.
