Emporia/Lyon County EMS has transported two individuals to Newman Regional Health following separate cases of heat exhaustion.
Emergency responders were called to Welch Stadium on the Emporia State University campus Wednesday afternoon for two reports of heat exhaustion roughly 10 minutes apart. The first call came down at 2:10 pm and the second just before 2:20 pm.
According to Emporia Fire Batallion Chief Eron Steinlage, crews transported one individual from both calls. Fire Capt. Tony Fuller says both were minors attending the Emporia State Music Festival.
Steinlage tells KVOE News heat exposure calls are typically uncommon in October, however, with humidity levels over 50 percent and temperatures in the upper 80’s throughout the day it is not impossible to see. He adds other factors that could attribute to heat exhaustion are the amount of excursion by the individual and the type of clothing they are wearing at the time.
