KVOE’s 18th annual Drive for Food fulfilled its goal Thursday:
Salvation Army Capt. Deb Thompson made the announcement after the annual drive produced 30,000 items. She tells KVOE News the donations come at a big time for the Salvation Army.
KVOE General Manager Ron Thomas called it “another spectacular year.”
Troop No. 157 Eagle Scout Max Piper has been part of the unloading effort the past six years, and he tells KVOE News it means a lot to him to be involved.
Some impressive totals have been announced during the drive:
*Emporia Middle School: 3,000 items
*Lyon County Showdown Rodeo: 600 items
*Midas Touch: 1,000 items
*ESB Financial: 3,100 items
First Church of the Nazarene: 1,500 items
*Timmerman Elementary: 5,000 items. Coordinator Megan Day recognized the community and highlighted the school’s use of the event as a community engagement lesson.
The drive will now help the food pantry full through the upcoming holiday season. Besides filling the Salvation Army’s food pantry, the drive also helped Emporia High Spartan Stop with 3,000 to 5,000 items.
Thompson says the non-perishable food items are now in the pantry, but the Salvation Army needs help sorting the items. If you would like to help, call Volunteer Services Coordinator Suzanne Worthen-Miller at 342-3093. Help may be needed into early next week.
