Northwest Missouri State scored 15 unanswered points in the 2nd half to fight off an Emporia State upset bid for a 34-23 win over the Hornets.
Emporia State received the opening kickoff and put together a 5 play 75 yard drive and took the early 7-0 lead on a 24 yard touchdown pass to Cole Schumacher.
After giving up a safety Emporia State added a 34 yard Calrk Schoonover field goal to take a 10-2 lead.
Carlos Grace capped 14 play 73 yard drive with a 3 yard touchdown run to give the Hornets a 17-12 lead before halftime.
The two teams traded scores to start the 2nd half. Emporia State scoring on a 16 yard pass to J.T. Mackey.
Northwest would add a touchown and 3 field goals, including one of 53 yards, to close out the scoring.
The Hornet defense held Northwest 16 points and 200 yards below their season average. Gary Woods finished with 10 tackles on the day.
Emporia State Coach Garin Higgins said they need to be better offensively.
Emporia State falls to 2-3 for the season and in the MIAA. They play at Fort Hays State next Saturday.
