The second annual Dia de los Muertos celebration hosted by Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow is set for this Saturday.
Sally Sanchez of Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow says she was blown away by last year’s turnout and is excited to see what this year’s celebration will hold.
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Hispanic holiday designed to celebrate the lives of passed loved ones rather than mourning the loss.
The Dia de los Muertos celebration will take place Saturday on the block of 7th between Commercial and Merchant. Vendors will open at 10 am with a parade to follow at 10:30 am. After the parade there will be a variety of activities consisting of contests, trick-or-treating, face painting, and the arrangement of a community ofrenda. At 3 pm the Granada Theater will feature a free showing of The Book of Life. Tickets can be picked up at Emporia Main Street, La Rumba, the Emporia Gazette, and both branches of the Emporia State Federal Credit Union.
