The property group behind Emporia’s Clarion Inn has filed for bankruptcy protection.
Emporia Property Group LLC filed for voluntary Chapter 11 protection in early October, according to the Kansas City Business Journal. The property company had just announced the completion of a $6 million renovation project to the former Avaste hotel at 2700 West 18th in March, including a name change to Clarion.
In its bankruptcy filing, the property group listed assets of $3.23 million and liabilities of over $6.4 million.
Calls to the property group number go to the Clarion, and requests for information have not been returned. Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Susan Rathke tells KVOE News management has said it plans to keep the hotel open under the Clarion flag.
Nearly 18 months ago, Emporia lost both the Best Western and Days Inn as part of a foreclosure. There has been no movement to reopen those hotels. In downtown, the Breckenridge Hotel and Convention Center project has yet to launch after several years of both working through government mandates for renovating historic properties and securing funds for the project.
