On Tuesday, the Granada Theater in Emporia hosted a special showing of 1000 Miles to Nome.
The film – created by Dave Mable – follows adventure athlete Steve Cannon and a few other 2019 Iditarod Trail challengers on their journey to Nome. Cannon has competed in numerous endurance events over the course of his life – a few notable ones include earning the “1000 Miles of Kanza” achievement in 2017, becoming just the second person to run the near 300-mile span of Iowa, and becoming the first to run the distance around Lake Michigan. However, as one of only 56 finishers since the event began in 2002, Cannon describes the Iditarod Trail Invitational as the “pinnacle” of the endurance sport.
It’s nearly impossible to put a journey like such into words, but Cannon says the emotional highs and lows are just as challenging as the physical ones.
Cannon says one of the most valuable lessons endurance competition has taught him is learning to silence the second thoughts. Cannon’s one-step-at-a-time philosophy enables him to uncover his true potential, and he believes it can do the same for others.
Cannon is a strong believer that each step of a significant journey is an adventure in and of itself. In fact, his advice to adventure-seekers can be applied to much more than endurance competitions.
1000 Miles to Nome and the stories that lie within it serve as hard evidence that big goals come with big challenges, however, challenges allow people to see what they’re truly capable of.
