The Neosho Regional Advisory Council and Kansas Water Office were seeking local input during a special open house event Tuesday evening.
The input is being sought as the water office is reviewing its Water Plan which was approved five years ago. Director Earl Lewis says updating their goals and action plans is a year-round effort.
The three main focal points for the office Tuesday were groundwater in the western portion of Kansas, water quality and sedimentation in local reservoirs — such as John Redmond. Lewis emphasized the third point and says flooding incidents — such as the five separate occasions in Lyon County recently — have a direct impact on sedimentation forming within reservoirs.
Lewis says increased sedimentation is often a major concern during times of drought as it can take away from overall water supplies. He says a lower supply can carry several negative impacts for communities such as stunting population growth and slowing economic development.
