Following an “outstanding” blood drive at Emporia High School Thursday, the American Red Cross is looking to keep the ball rolling locally.
Thursday’s drive saw a total of 134 units of blood collected — 17 units above goal — as the Red Cross is still looking to “bounce back” from low donation numbers in the spring and summer. American Red Cross Central Plains Representative Susan Faler — a recent guest of KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment — says this kind of response is exactly what the Red Cross has come to expect out of the Emporia community.
Faler says despite the positive turnout Thursday, blood donations and supplies remain low currently. She says this can be contributed to a number of factors, namely recent natural disasters which not only can put a halt on blood drives, but also can destroy facilities where donations are collected and stored.
Thankfully, Faler tells KVOE News there are still several opportunities for the local community to help bolster donation numbers through the remainder of 2019. This includes blood drives taking place on:
*Wednesday, Nov. 6, Burlington High School
*Tuesday, Nov. 12, Olpe High School
*Monday, Nov. 25, Chase County High School
*Monday, Dec. 9, William Allen White Elementary School
*Thursday, Dec. 12, Emporia High School
*Monday, Dec. 16, Yates Center
*Friday, Dec. 20, Newman Regional Health
*New Year’s Eve, Staples parking lot hosted by Radius Brewing Company.
