It was not a good afternoon for the Emporia State football team.
Washburn out scored the Hornets 37-17 in the 116th turnpike tussle.
Emporia State Coach Garin Higgins called it a bad game for the Hornets.
Washburn scored on their first possession. Emporia State answered with a 70 touchdown run by Carlos Grace to tie the game at 7.
Washburn took the lead for good 59 seconds later.
Washburn quarterback Mitch Schurig threw for 276 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Clark Schoonover kicked a 24 yard fieldgoal and Dalton Cowan scored on a 1 yard run for the other Hornet scores.
Carlos Grace led Emporia State with 97 rushing yards.
Dawson Hammes led the Hornet defense with 11 tackles.
Lawson Holbert also finished with 11 tackles.
With the loss the Hornets fall to 2-7 for the season. They play their final road game next Saturday at Missouri Southern.
