Veterans Day will definitely feel like winter with biting cold and blustery conditions all day, and the conditions have prompted organizers of certain Veterans Day activities to either head indoors for those events or cancel those outright.
Emporia’s Veterans Day parade has been canceled with a combination of cold, blustery and possibly icy conditions for most of the morning. As mentioned Sunday, Emporia’s memorial service has been moved from the All Veterans Memorial to the Fairgrounds Anderson Building and delayed to start at 11:15 am.
A mix of snow and freezing drizzle is possible through late morning, causing isolated slick spots across the area. Emporia travel appears to be largely OK, but isolated slick areas have developed along the Kansas Turnpike and US Highway 56 has more widespread icing.
At least one area school district has announced a schedule adjustment. USD 243 Lebo-Waverly is on a two-hour delay due to scattered icing.
Temperatures will barely move to the upper 20s, and northerly winds as high as 40 mph will keep wind chills in the low teens for most of the day. Chase and Greenwood counties are in a wind advisory until 2 pm with wind gusts possibly touching 45 mph. The winds also led to several power outages in the Olpe and Hamilton areas. Close to 90 Evergy customers in and around those communities lost power Monday morning.
KVOE will carry Emporia’s memorial service on 14 KVOE and 96.9 FM. The memorial service will also air on KVOE-TV at KVOE.com and ValuNet FIBER channel 3.

Noon Sunday: Emporia memorial service, Chase County’s Veterans Day ceremony both moved inside
Biting cold temperatures have prompted organizers of two Veterans Day activities to head indoors for those events.
Emporia’s memorial service has been moved from the All Veterans Memorial to the Fairgrounds Anderson Building. The service time has also been changed from 11 am to 11:15 am to give residents extra travel time.
In Chase County, the holiday luncheon will still be at St. Anthony Hall as scheduled. However, the formal ceremony has already been moved to the Chase County High School beginning at 1:30 pm. Former US Navy fighter pilot and current Southwest Airlines pilot Steve Dieker, a Chase County native, is the guest speaker.
Morning temperatures will be in the mid-20s with an outside chance for snow showers. Wind chills will be in the teens for most of Monday.
KVOE will carry Emporia’s memorial service on 14 KVOE and 96.9 FM. Both the memorial service and the parade at 9:30 am will also air on KVOE-TV at KVOE.com and ValuNet FIBER channel 3.
10 am Sunday: Chase County moves Veterans Day ceremony inside
Chase County is getting ready for its Veterans Day activities on the holiday.
The luncheon will start at 11:30 am Monday in the St. Anthony Hall in Strong City, followed by the annual Veterans Day ceremony at 1:30 pm. Organizers have already decided to move the holiday ceremony indoors, so it will be at the Chase County High School gymnasium. Chase County native Steve Dieker, an international captain for Southwest Airlines and a former US Navy fighter pilot, will be the guest speaker.
Chase County veterans and family members are encouraged to attend the luncheon, with all invited to attend the Veterans Day ceremony.
Meanwhile, organizers of Emporia’s Veterans Day activities are also watching the weather forecast, which includes morning temperatures in the 20s and gusty north winds. A decision on whether to keep the memorial service at the All Veterans Memorial or move it to the Fairgrounds Anderson Building should be announced by noon Sunday.
