One woman escaped serious injury following a vehicle-deer accident which led to a water rescue call Monday evening.
According to a news release from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, 42-year-old Danelle Hagan was traveling northbound on Interstate 35 and approaching the Sixth Avenue exit at mile marker 133 in a purple Honda Fit. Hagan struck a deer carcass which was in the roadway causing her to lose control of her vehicle and slide down an embankment where it came to a rest in roughly three and a half feet of water.
Hagan was able to exit the vehicle and get on top of the roof. A passerby saw Hagan and alerted authorities who, once on scene, were able to extend a ladder to the Honda and get Hagan on solid ground. Hagan was examined on scene but refused medical transport.
She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident. Air temperatures were 19 degrees around 6 pm with wind chills around 8 above zero.
6:30 pm Monday: Deer vehicle accident leads to water rescue call.
One woman declined a hospital trip at the site of a reported water rescue.
Emporia Fire, Emporia Police and Lyon County deputies responded to Interstate 35 near mile marker 133, or the Sixth Avenue exit, shortly after 6 pm. The original call was for a crash with a vehicle in water, but a secondary call soon after requested the water rescue.
Early indications are the driver hit a deer and went off the highway into a small creek bed near a lake on the south side of the Interstate. That person then crawled to the top of the vehicle before authorities reached her. Most of the vehicle was submerged when rescue crews arrived.
The woman was observed on site before she refused the hospital trip. Air temperatures were 19 degrees around 6 pm with wind chills around 8 above zero.
