Lyon County election results almost totally certified

Lyon County’s general election was officially held last week, but the final results won’t be completely in the books until Thursday.

Virtually all the results have been certified as part of the formal vote canvass, which took place Tuesday. County Clerk Tammy Vopat says there were 110 provisional ballots submitted and 88 counted. Most ballots were disallowed because voters did not have photo ID or were not registered in Lyon County, although one voter submitted a ballot despite being a felon.

The vote canvass did not impact the final results for Emporia City Commission or USD 253 Emporia Board of Education. Art Gutierrez, Leslie Seeley, Jeremy Dorsey and Grant Riles were elected to the school board, while Rob Gilligan, Becky Smith and Susan Brinkman won seats on the City Commission. The canvass also did not affect the results of the USD 253 bond question for facility improvements.

The canvass did certify results for mayor and city council in Lyon County’s smaller towns, especially with the number of write-in votes cast:

*Mike Spade was re-elected as Admire mayor. Michael Uhl was elected to Admire City Council
*Charles Eastman was re-elected as Allen’s mayor. Sidney Conger and Rachel Brunmeier won seats on the City Council
*In Bushong, Aaron Atchison, Henry Freeman and Manuel Jackson claimed seats on the City Council
*Jennifer Hamman, Lori Fields and Yvonne Gardner were elected to Hartford City Council
*Dallas Shepherd was elected as both Neosho Rapids mayor and City Council member. Shepherd has chosen to serve as mayor, so the City Council will choose his replacement. A date for that decision has not been announced. Brian Shank, Karla Mendoza, Larry Masenthin and Matt Martin were elected to City Council
*Keith Pimple was re-elected as Olpe mayor. Rick Jones and Les Farr tied for City Council, so a coin flip during Thursday’s Lyon County Commission meeting will determine that race
*In Reading, Malonne Davies, Billy Paige and Marc Atchison were elected to City Council
