Plumb Place and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1980 are urging residents to continue their financial support as urgent fundraising drives continue for those groups.
The VFW cleared around $2,400 Saturday through a concert and raffles, pushing its fundraising total to around $8,700 since the VFW’s announcement Oct. 24 that it owed around $20,000 to the Internal Revenue Service after employee tax documents were not filed as required over a four-year stretch. Post Commander Michael White says he has been impressed by the scope of community support.
The board has authorized the sale of the building to clear the debt if needed, although White has said that step would be a last-ditch effort. White also says he and an outside accountant continue their research into past documents to make sure the post doesn’t owe more to the IRS.
Plans have finalized for the VFW’s next fundraiser Nov. 23. There will be a disc golf tournament, family event and a concert featuring the band Range Fire sprinkled through the day and evening.
Separately, Plumb Place has generated around $6,100 to fund its operations through the rest of the year after a KVOE News article detailed the shelter’s current financial situation Oct. 30. Plumb Place still needs close to $9,000 for bills, maintenance, salaries and other items to get through December.
The women’s shelter is also looking to cover around $30,000 in a variety of past due amounts from earlier this year after it did not receive a Kansas Housing Resource Corporation Emergency Solutions grant this past summer. Plumb Place has cleared its back tax load and several past due accounts with prior donations, but it recently had to shift a Housing and Urban Development grant of $5,500 to make payroll and pay recent bills.
The Plumb Place board is hoping to get positive news in the next few days about another grant to continue operations. The board’s next meeting is this upcoming Tuesday.
