Residents attending Emporia Main Street’s annual Public Improvement Auction raised funds for an expanding project downtown.
Earlier this year, Main Street installed a speaker system for part of downtown — Commercial Street from Sixth to 10th. The goal now is to expand the system north and south to cover most of the heart of downtown. Main Street Director Casey Woods says the almost $15,000 raised Thursday night will definitely help — especially because it costs around $9,500 a block to expand the current system.
People turned out to bid on an array of live, silent and dessert auction items through the evening. Top auction items were the pair of veterans banner slots, which went for $600 each. The Design-A-Beer option through Radius Brewing generated $350, and a cake brought in $300 during the vent’s first-ever dessert auction.
