Decision making, organization, time management and responsibility are just a few of the benefits a new project-based learning opportunity will provide Logan Avenue Elementary School students.
Students approved the addition of four-disc golf baskets and the construction of a six-basket course at Logan Avenue through a special school-wide vote Friday. The new course is part of a larger project-based learning project which will see the students research, design and install the course from start to finish.
Teacher Lacy Brokaw says her K-2 class was responsible for organizing Friday’s mock election.
The special vote ran from 10 am to 11:45 am and saw students approve the item by a final vote tally of 183 for yes and 23 for no. According to Brokaw Norfolk Iron and Metal, a sponsor of the school’s annual Lions Launch disc golf tournament, offered to make the baskets and donate them to the school. Dynamic Discs will also offer expertise on course design.
Fifth-graders will observe the course at Peter Pan Park for perspective on course design. Fourth-grade students will research tee pad options, including costs and durability. Third-graders will research distances from tee to basket. Second-graders will handle etiquette research for signage along the course. First-graders and kindergarten students will put together requests and thank-you notes.
The current plans are to have the course completed in February.
