Investigators are piecing together how a semi went off Interstate 35 on the north edge of Emporia, damaging a guardrail and a directional sign before crashing near a small pond Friday afternoon.
The crash was reported shortly after 3 pm near mile marker 132, less than a mile east of the Burlingame Road exit. Early indications are the semi was southbound and left the highway, going through a guardrail and crashing into a sign on the north side of the highway. The semi then went down a steep embankment and stopped just short of a pond.
Authorities say one person was taken to Newman Regional Health with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media will have updates when those are available.
