As vaping continues to draw national headlines and garner a lot of health concerns, Healthier Lyon County has scheduled a special community seminar on the topic Thursday.
“Vaping: Healthy Alternative or Health Epidemic?” will take place at Flint Hills Technical College, 3301 West 18th. Dr. Michael Kim of the University of Kansas Medical Center and a representative of the American Cancer Center will discuss recent research into vaping, including an announcement the additive vitamin E acetate may be at least partially responsible for a spate of lung issues announced across the country since early this summer.
Nationally, health officials tie vaping to rapid development of severe lung disease, with around 2,200 cases and over 40 deaths this year. In Kansas, the Department of Health and Environment says nearly 20 cases of lung disease and two deaths are linked to vaping. Proponents of vaping say the practice can be a healthy alternative to smoking, depending on what users put in their pods.
The conference goes from 6:30-8 pm.
