A landmark in Council Grove has closed its doors for the time being.
The Historic Hays House says it is closed until further notice, although staff is hoping to reopen the restaurant early next year. The restaurant’s website, www.hayshouse.com, says unforeseen circumstances have prompted the closure.
KVOE News has reached out to the restaurant directly and to investors seeking comment.
The Hays House opened in 1857 and has been among the oldest continuously-operated restaurants west of the Mississippi River, if not the oldest. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The business has survived major fires in 1886 and in 2011.
We’ll have more details as they come available on KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media.
