For most this is the season for giving and for others it’s the season of getting packages that do not belong to them.
Porch pirates, or thieves who steal packages left on the doorsteps of others, are one of the biggest concerns for local law enforcement throughout the holiday season according to Emporia Police Sgt. Lisa Sage. Sage, a recent guest of KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment Monday, offered some advice to help residents ensure their deliveries make it into their homes without being intercepted by thieves this holiday season.
She says if you are ordering gifts or packages from online retailers and know you will not be home when it arrives a good practice is having the package shipped to an alternate address.
If this is not an option Sage strongly recommends residents to take advantage of electronic tracking offered through most mail carriers. She adds once you receive a notification that your package has arrived at your home do not delay in going and getting it inside.
Again, if this is not possible due to work or other commitments Sage says to reach out to a neighbor or friends and family and ask if they can pick up the package and hold it until you return home. Also, modern technology has provided a number of new devices, such as doorbell cameras, which can help you monitor your front porch and deter any would-be package pillagers who may be lurking nearby.
