A former bank executive in Harveyville has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of embezzlement.
US Attorney Stephen McAllister says 60-year-old Debra Converse pleaded Monday.
The case developed while Converse was vice president of First National Bank of Harveyville. In April, shortly after Converse resigned, bank leaders reported a suspected embezzlement by Converse after alleged software glitches. The bank’s audit also alleged Converse wrote $5,700 in checks payable to First National Bank for processing resident utility payments while serving as Harveyville City Treasurer — and then cashing the checks instead of crediting the revenue to the bank.
Converse has already agreed to pay restitution of over $107,000. She could face up to 30 years in federal prison when she is sentenced March 9.
