The final Emporia City Commission meeting of 2019 also marked the end of a nearly nine-year tenure for one commissioner.
During the city’s action session Wednesday evening Mayor Jon Geitz announced that due to scheduling conflicts commissioner Bobbi Mylnar would be unable to attend the city’s first meeting of 2020 making Wednesday her final official meeting as a member of the commission. Mylnar decided earlier this year she would not run for re-election, as she felt “eight years was enough.”
Mylnar says one reason for that decision was to make way for a new generation of commissioners to step in and bring in fresh ideas.
Mlynar served almost nine years on the City Commission, with a slightly longer-term than other city commissioners in Emporia’s history after state lawmakers adjusted the election cycle for local positions. A small reception in Mylnar’s honor was held following the commission meeting.
Separately during the meeting, commissioners held a public hearing and eventually approved an amendment to the 2019 budget to allow additional budget authority for three funds. City Treasurer Janet Harouff.
Harouff says the city has plenty of cash on hand to handle the amendments and they will have no negative impact on either the current year or 2020 budgets.
In other business commissioners also approved an engineering and design contract with BG Consultants for a waterline replacement project on 12th Ave. from Grand to Constitution. The design process may take up to 3 months to complete after which time the project will be put out to bid.
Actual construction on the project is anticipated to begin by next August.
The Emporia City Commission will next meet on Jan. 8 2020.
