2020 is coming quickly. So is the census.
The 10-year nationwide headcount begins in April, and two local members on the Kansas Complete Count Committee say it’s vitally important that all state residents, including those in Emporia and Lyon County, step up and be counted when asked. Committee member Rob Gilligan says an accurate count could lead to a population increase, something the city really hasn’t had for a decade.
Complete Count committee members like Gilligan and Robin Newell are worried about undercounts — and a significant loss of money that could follow.
The census is mandated by the United States Constitution. Besides determining jow much federal money goes to cities and counties, it is used to figure out how many lawmakers each state gets in the US House of Representatives.
